Who Would Be Your Mentor

I was asked earlier this week if I could meet a couple of times a year with someone as a mentor, who would it be? Wow! The names of so many people ran through my mind. Here are some names and why I would choose each one:

  • Tim Stevens - He is the executive pastor at Granger Community Church. I read his blog daily. I learn so much from him. Dave and I get to spend a full day with him and Mark Waltz at the end of the month, just the four of us. I can't wait.
  • Andy Stanley - He is the senior pastor at North Point Community Church. He is the best communicator I have ever heard.
  • Perry Noble - He is the senior pastor at New Spring Community Church. This guy is not afraid to do what God is calling him to do. He is sold out to making disciples of Jesus.
  • Dave Ferguson - He is the senior pastor at Community Christian Church. He is the leader in going to multiple sites as a church. He is the big idea guy.
  • Aubrey Daniels - He is a leadership guru.
  • Rob Bell - He is the pastor at Mars Hill. He is an author and creator of the Nooma series.
  • Jim Collins - Author of Good to Great.

Who would you pick if you could be mentored by anyone in your field?

I would choose two people.

Mike Wallace from, CBS' 60 Minutes- He is a person who suffers from severe bi-polar depression but has led a very productive life. I have corresponded with him and his inspiration has been felt.

Dallas Willard- His insights on spiritual formation and hearing God are the best I've read.

One other person: Brian Bauknight - This guy knows how to run a church. He is a great speaker and never gets caught up in the political stuff at conference. I don't really know him, but I respect him

In addition to a few on your list, Andy Stanley, Rob Bell and Jim Collins, I would pick
John Maxwell- the Christian leadership consultant and author
John Ortberg- Menlo Park, CA teaching pastor
Erwin McManus-Lead pastor of Mosaic and author

Randy - I love your idea to talk with Dallas Willard. That guy has done more for my spiritual formation than any other author.

Tom,

Great list of leaders. I would add John Ortberg's wife Nancy to the list. I was able to spend some one on one time with her a couple of years ago. She had incredible insight.

I assume you mean living people. My list might include...

Marva Dawn, Thomas Oden & William Willimon - to keep me theologically sound

Adam Hamilton, John Ed Mathison, Bob Russell - pastors who have built something worthwhile

Shane Claiborne - to keep me focused on what really matters

Deryl Larsen - to keep me honest

Randy Roda. He alone may be able to mentor me in faithfulness and not in success.

Brett,

I'm impressed you would choose Randy. The insight that Randy now has about ministry is priceless. I know I could learn a great deal from him. Just to have Randy ask me if I am keeping the main thing the main thing would add incredible value to my life. I could never push back because I know what he has seen and what he would really be asking me and why.

Keith,
It is funny how you don't immediately think about those you know. I am friends with Marva Dawn and we have done workshops together. I agree with you about her theological integrity.

Two of the people I mentioned, actually, are people I know. I could, of course, mention several more and include more people I know (Pat Albright, John Ciampa, Dayton Mix, Randy Roda, & Bob Zilhaver for starters), but I was largely thinking of a "wish list".

I met Marva Dawn several years ago at a Pgh Seminary event, but, sadly, don't know her too well! She's an amazing Christian saint, however, and I was monumentally impressed with her presence and wisdom, and her writings have really instructed me. There aren't too many writers out there who walk on as solid theological ground as Marva Dawn.

To even be considered as a mentor to anyone is indeed very humbling. I don't know what to say!

I would pick an old sage like Erwin Kerr, and a leader like Patrick Lencioni, author of "Five Dysfunctions of a Team".

Keith H. McIlwain said...

Don't know Patrick, but Erwin strikes me as a good choice.

Greg,

I have been to leadership conferences where Patrick Lencioni has spoken, he is the real deal. I love that he is a Christian business leader that fully admits his faith background and its influence on him.

Our Senior Management Team at Charter Oak Church brought in an incredible facilitator to walk us through the Five Dysfunctions of a Team and Patrick Lencioni's teaching on what to do to counteract them. It was one of the most beneficial things I have ever done with a team of people. It was priceless.
